2019 Elk Grove Chinese Association Foundation Scholarship Recipients

   

Melody Chan graduated from Sheldon High School in Elk Grove. She will be attending University of California (UC), Santa Barbara this fall majoring in Biology. She had overcame countless barriers as an immigrant over the past four years. Her courage led her to gaining leadership positions such as a Biotech officer, class president of the student body and being swim team captain for two consecutive years. Besides, she also focused on serving the community through volunteering at the UC Davis Medical Center and the Sacramento Chinese Catholic Community.


Chun Deng graduated from Franklin High School in 2019. He will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall of this year, majoring in Computer Engineering and Business Administration. Having immigrated to the United States at age of 10, Chun sojourned through the crucibles of discovering self-direction, and passion for bio-mechanical neural systems. Inspired by the sense of cohesion between individuality and community in the Elk Grove Chinese Association, Chun wishes to reciprocate the kind help he had received, and contribute his own.


Jennifer Wu graduated from Mira Loma High School after pursuing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, which entails 6 IB tests, a Theory of Knowledge course, 150 hours of CAS (creativity, action, service), and a 4,000-word Extended Essay. She participated in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), a competitive business organization, and served as the Vice President for her last three years and has won many awards at the regional and state level. In addition, Jennifer participated in Mira Loma Dance Marathon for three years and served as co-chairman her senior year where, over the years, she helped raise over 6,000 dollars for the UC Davis Children’s Hospital. She has also participated in Key Club, Chinese Honor Society, and interned at the Department of Water Resources. This fall, Jennifer will be attending California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, majoring in civil engineering.


Allison Zhang graduated from Sacramento Country Day School, where she was the editor-in-chief of the high-school newspaper, the Octagon, and the concertmaster of the orchestra. For the past eight years, Allison has also participated in Lifting Spirits with Music, a student-run organization that holds monthly music programs at senior homes. She has done research on hematopoietic stem cells for two summers at the Weissman Lab at Stanford University, and she plans to continue that research in the fall, when she will be attending Stanford and pursuing a human biology major.
