2021 Elk Grove Chinese Association Foundation Scholarship Recipients

Wesley Zhang graduated from Cosumnes Oaks High School with a 4.6462 GPA, with the rank of the top second in his graduating class. He was committed to academics while also participating in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. During his time in high school, he was a member of Mathletes for 4 years and was the co-president during his senior year, a member of the varsity tennis team for 4 years, a member of the Cosumnes Oaks Wind Ensemble, and a math tutor as part of the California Scholarship Federation (CSF). He was also an active member of the community, having completed over 300 hours of community service. He will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall of 2021 and will be majoring in Computer Science.

Sophie Zhang is a graduate of Davis Senior High School. She was the vice president of the DHS Women in STEM club and played on the school’s varsity tennis team for four years. Outside of school, she attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as a pre-college student and played the violin in the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. Her interests include biology, music, and art, and she intends to explore these areas further during her time in college. She will attend Brown University in the fall with an undeclared major.

Justin Wahby, age 17, graduated from Franklin high school being within the top 10 of his class. During high school, Justin led numerous clubs and organizations, including the Franklin Music Society (President), MESA or Math, Engineering, Science, Achievement (Vice President), National Honors Society (Co-president), Chemistry Club (Vice President), and Challenge Day (Leader). He was also a member of his school’s Varsity Tennis Team.

Outside of school, Justin is an accomplished pianist who has studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College. He has garnered awards at a regional, national, and international level. Additionally, Justin played clarinet as part of the Sacramento Youth Symphony for 6 years.

Justin is planning on attending Stanford University in the fall. He is interested in studying either economics, computer science, or engineering.

Derek Yuan graduated from Mira Loma High School in 2021. At his school, he was the founder and captain of the Policy Debate Team, coaching numerous novice debaters to state and national level qualifications. He was also the president of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), leading the school to win first place out of all the FBLA chapters in Northern California. Although currently undecided in major, Derek will be studying at Harvard College in the fall, pursuing a career in Law.

Wayne Chen graduated Cosumnes Oaks High School as the school valedictorian. He was an active musician. As a clarinetist, he played in his school’s wind ensemble and with several regional and All-State honor bands. As a pianist, he accompanied musician friends during performances at community gatherings and in senior centers. Wayne was also a varsity tennis player and a Mathletes member throughout high school. In addition, he served as an EGCA webmaster for 4 years. Wayne will be attending Cornell where he intends to pursue a computer science major.
