2020 Elk Grove Chinese Association Foundation Scholarship Recipients

Davina Gumm graduated from Franklin High School. She was the only 4 year member of school dance team-Fusion Dance Company, serving as Assistant Student Director her junior year and Student Director her senior year. Davina also served as Senior Class Historian and participated in Leadership and National Honor Society. Outside of school, she was a competitive dancer with Elite Studio of Dance and taught piano to children on weekends after passing all the exams within the Music Teacher Association of California.  Alongside her extracurricular, Davina was devoted to academics, taking as many AP classes as possible, despite Fusion was taking up a large portion of her schedule all 4 years. Davina will be attending the University of California, Berkeley in the fall to study Molecular and Cellular Biology at the College of Letters and Science.


Darren Huai graduated from Franklin High School in 2020. He will be attending University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the fall of this year, majoring in Aerospace Engineering. Having an interest in coding and aerial innovations, Darren plans to pursue his passion and further intertwine the aeronautical and computer science fields. After 4 years of varsity tennis and a year of varsity swim, he has built character, leadership, and perseverance along with strong bonds with his peers. Besides that, Darren has spent hundreds of hours helping his community, and wishes to give back to the community that has supported and inspired him throughout the years.


Aaron QuockAaron Quock graduated from River City High School in West Sacramento. He joined both the track and basketball team for three years. Alongside these activities, he has also volunteered his time with APAPA, Chang Cheng Chinese School, and other organizations and events. He will be attending the University of California San Diego, in the spring, where he plans to pursue a major in Mechanical Engineering. This later enrollment is due to his obligation to the US Army Reserves.


Michelle Tong graduated from Franklin High School. At school, she joined Mathletes for 3 years. In order to help more immigrants, she actively evolved in the English Learner Program. Outside of school, she loves the Traditional Chinese Dance. Not only she wants herself to improve, but also she wants more children to be in touch and understand their Chinese Culture. Michelle has reached 435 community services hours in four years of her high-school, most of the hours were devoted to serving as a teaching assistant at the Chinese School and Dance school. This fall, Michelle will be attending the University of California, San Diego, majoring in Computer Science. She is inspired to explore new frontiers of science and technology.


Omar Wahby, Salutatorian of the Franklin High School Class of 2020, is an active member of Franklin’s student body. He has served as President of Franklin’s Math, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA) Program, Chemistry Club, and Music Society for the past 2-3 years. He has also been a member of Franklin’s Mathletes Team and Varsity Tennis Team since his freshman year.

Musically, Omar has served as Principal Clarinet of the Sacramento Youth Symphony Premier Orchestra for five years and the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra during his senior year. He is also involved in several chamber music ensembles and has served as a regular performer with a community outreach organization called Lifting Spirits with Music. 

Omar will be attending Harvard University in the fall and is currently undecided about his major, although he is interested in pursuing a career in math or science.


Roger Xia graduated from Davis Senior High School (DSHS) with a 4.0 unweighted GPA and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) Pre-College as a multiple award-winning youth classical pianist and violinist in many domestic and international performance competitions. Through the past six years, he has been the concertmaster of the DSHS Symphony Orchestra and the Oliver Wendell Holmes Junior High School Orchestra. He joined the Sacramento Youth Symphony (SYS) at the age of eight and was the concertmaster during his first season in the SYS Classic Orchestra as well as during the last two of his four seasons in the SYS Premier Orchestra. He has also been a member of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra (SFSYO) since 2015 and served as concertmaster for the most recent three seasons. Additionally, he was selected to participate in the National Youth Orchestra (NYO-USA) in 2019 and 2020. Aside from music, Roger shadowed cancer research at UC Davis Medical Center. He played on the high school tennis team, enjoys skiing and practicing Kung-Fu, and loves playing Ping Pong and soccer with friends. Roger will be attending Stanford University in the fall, where he will continue to explore his passions in STEM and music.


Carmen Yu graduated from Franklin High School, where she developed a diverse scope of interests that helped her nurture an overarching love for problem-solving and service. As a co-president of Mathletes, a four-year member of the MESA team, and a lead instructor for Elk Grove Mathnasium, she was able to further her passion for STEM beyond the traditional classroom setting. At school, she also served as a member of the Challenge Day team and the Vice President of Franklin Key Club. She will be attending Brown University in the fall of 2020 to pursue a major in Applied Mathematics.
